The Importance of Targeted Mailing Lists

While the merits of having targeted mailing lists are somewhat obvious, you might also be wondering why exactly it is “important”. Having a targeted list is great, but wouldn’t it be better to have 2000 subscribers that weren’t particularly targeted then it would be to have 50 that were? That short answer is no.

Before going on I should clarify what I mean by “targeted mailing lists” in it’s practical application. Often people might optimize a website or build an Adwords campaign around low hanging fruit – or keywords that do not have as much competition and are therefore easier to rank with or are cheaper. For example, you might sell web hosting but find that the keyword “free web hosting” has less competition or is cheaper and build a campaign around it. If you had an opt-in form on your site this would lead to an un-targeted mailing list and would not be what you want. I’ll explain why.

You may or may not have heard of something called the 80/20 principle. It is the theory that 80 percent of your results come from 20 percent of your efforts. It is a theory that is proven true time and time again in business, and one of the main problems with not developing targeted mailing lists is that you inevitable spend 80 percent of your time managing the needs of subscribers that never equate to buyers. This alone can prevent your business from expanding and potentially mean its end.

Additionally it can give you a false gauge on a products potential because if your mailing list is not targeted then you might send an advertisement to thousands of subscribers, get poor results, and come to the conclusion that the product was the problem when in reality it was the type of subscriber you have been attracting.

In conclusion, the wisest strategy when developing a mailing list is to develop targeted mailing lists of subscribers that are looking for exactly what you are advertising. This is the surest way to make the best use of your time and energy. You’d be amazed at how much money even a small list of targeted subscribers can generate over time when properly developed and nurtured.
